Erica Bilder began her career at the Mickery Theater, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where she worked with such notables as Robert Wilson, Ping Chong, Theodora Skipitares, The Wooster Group, Mabou Mines, Squat Theatre, Pip Simmons, Terayama Shuji and his Tenjo Sajiki troupe, Meme Perlini and many others.

Affiliated with Waseda University, on a scholarship awarded by the Japanese government, she spent two years in Japan researching and being actively involved in the theater world of Tokyo. She received a Master’s Degree in Theater from the Drama Department of the University of Amsterdam.

Ms. Bilder then worked as an independent producer in The Netherlands, before venturing into an acting/directing career in the United States. She received her training in New York at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and the Bill Esper Studio. Her New York productions include The Maids by Jean Genet, with an all-male cast, presented at The Living Theatre’s New Directors Series to highly critical acclaim. For New York’s La MaMa Theater she directed the American premiere of Franz Xavier Kroetz’ one-woman play Extended Forecast starring Estelle Parsons, a play she also translated from German into English with the Oscar winner actress.

For almost a decade, Ms. Bilder was an artist-in-residence at La MaMa’s Experimental Theater Center with her company The Lippincott Players. Her interpretation of Samuel Beckett’s plays Cascando and Eh Joe (originally written for radio and television), won critical praise in New York as well as abroad, presented at the Annex theater of La MaMa New York and at Rome’s Teatro dell’Angelo. Ms. Bilder has been affiliated as an actress/collaborator and resident fight choreographer with the Boston-based The Company Of Women, led by Kristin Linklater and Carol Gilligan. She has also worked, as a co-director, actor and fight choreographer with another all-female Shakespeare troupe, the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company. Several times Ms. Bilder was invited to create work for the Assos International Theater Festival in Turkey. In Ôlümsüz Yasam Kasri she centered a play on the experiences of the residents of the village of Assos. A year later she created a production of Medea (a monologue), written by Italian/Dutch playwright Patrizia Filia, at the site of a Temple dedicated to Athena, perched high above the village and overlooking the Aegean Sea. The same playwright wrote a monologue for her based on the life of Joan of Arc, Jehanne, which received its world premiere in Holland in the Dutch language, and which Ms. Bilder consecutively performed in the Italian language throughout Italy. Ms. Bilder also trained as a drama therapist, and worked with emotionally disturbed and developmentally delayed pre-schoolers at the Manhattan-based Gramercy School, and with inmates of the Brooklyn House of Detention for Men. She received her M.A. in Drama Therapy from New York University.

Ms. Bilder moved to Italy in the late ‘90’s, where she continued to work as a director, actress and fight choreographer. The Region of Abruzzo awarded her with a commission to create Orfeo, an adaptation of Angelo Poliziano’s work with original music, in collaboration with Lanciano-based chamber music ensemble The Camerata Anxanum. The Cultural Services Center of Lanciano invited her to teach drama workshops at the local schools, resulting in a reworking of the Demeter and Persephone myth, Il mito di Cerere e Proserpina. At the Lippincott Festival, supported with funds from the Region of Abruzzo, the Italian versions of Medea and Jehanne were presented alongside with Orfeo, all on site-specific locations throughout the region.

In 2005, she moved back to her native country, where next to directing (Seneca's Thyestes) and fight choreographing (Vuur, Augustus: Oklahoma) she immersed herself in the corporate world as a presentation skills trainer. For four years, she was the stage director of all of the European Brand Meetings of ASICS Europe B.V. and Onitsuka Tiger.

Erica Bilder also worked as an archivist for The Living Theatre in New York and the Mickery Theatre/Touch Time archive and library in Amsterdam.

As an (International Baccalaureate) educator, Erica has worked in Italy, the United Arab Emirates and India. She is currently connected with the international Neerja Modi World School in Jaipur, India, where she directs high school students in drama productions, including Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Othello and Twelfth Night; Euripides' Medea and Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding.

As an archivist and librarian, she heads the Bilderstorm and Touch Time libraries, located at Donderboerkamp in Donderen, a former Cold War ammunition depot in Drenthe, The Netherlands.
